Batesville FFA chapter hosts Winter Leadership Conference
Posted By: Lucy Harris   2/5/2021

The FFA officer team at Batesville High School put on their very own WLC from the school’s cafeteria

BATESVILLE, Arkansas, January 28, 2021-- After many hours of hard work and preparation, the Batesville FFA officer team was able to host an incredible night of games and friendly competition for their fellow FFA members.

Due to the current COVID-19 restrictions, Arkansas FFA was unable to put on their usual Winter Leadership Conference for the members at Camp Couchdale in Hot Springs. However, the officers of the Batesville FFA chapter took matters into their own hands. They were sent  a small package from the Arkansas FFA chapter to get started, but they included so much more.

The night began with three randomly selected teams-each being led by two of the officers. The teams’ first task was to come up with a creative team name and chant. Batesville’s Ag teachers, Cody Cornett and Kasey Sims, were the judges of this contest. Next, each team had to perform tasks as a group without verbal communications. For example, they had to get in order alphabetically by first name, shoe size, height, etc. Several other team activities led up to the finale. The last activity of the night was the egg drop contest. Each team was given a bag of supplies and an egg. The goal was to build a structure to keep the egg safe from being dropped from a height of 10 feet but they had to reach almost 30 before a winner was declared.

This was by far the most engaging and entertaining chapter night of the year for Batesville FFA. Everyone involved continuously laughed and had fun the whole night. It definitely wasn’t the usual Greenhand/Impact conference that the students have gone to in the past, but it was a great introductory activity for the newer members. There were plenty of team building games and competitive aspects for everyone to open up and have fun with. Hopefully more chapters can get inspired from what Batesville did and have nights like this of their own.

Batesville FFA students win first state contest since 1950

The Agriculture Communications team at Batesville High School received first place in the state this year

BATESVILLE, Arkansas, August 4, 2020-- After countless hours of practice, the Agriculture Communications (Ag Comm) team won their first state contest.

The team was composed of four members: Lucy Harris, Casyn Tate, Jacob Birkhead, and Austin “Kevin” Johnson. They were coached by the BHS Ag teachers, Cody Cornett and Taylor Donnelly. These students have been training for this contest since August 2019, and have put an extreme amount of effort into practicing. They attended several practice contests at the beginning of this year and continued to work throughout the quarantine. Not only did they place first, but three of the members also tied for highest individual score-Lucy, Casyn, and Kevin.

The Ag Comm contest is separated into two parts. The first part consists of taking both an editing quiz and an AP style quiz, and the top three teams from that event move onto the next round. In the final round, each member has a different task such as video editing, website design, opinion writing, and news writing. The members listened to a press conference and had to do their designated task based on the information given.

These students remained incredibly positive the whole time even though the contest wasn’t exactly normal. Delayed twice, once for Covid, the press conference was given over Zoom, while the students were spread out in the school’s Agri buildings, and Kevin, in Hot Springs at Camp Couchdale. Normally this contest is located on the University of Arkansas’ campus and winning would allow for the team to compete at the national level in Indianapolis, Indiana this upcoming October. For now, the national contest is possibly postponed until the 2021 convention, with the qualifying teams being recognized at the Virtual National Convention this fall.

American Degrees

3 of our members applied for the American FFA Degree. The American Degree is the highest degree one can earn in FFA. Less than 1% of all members ever make it to this achievement. This was done by completing a 24 page application, submitting all their SAE records for their FFA career, as well as all college level agricultural work and FFA time spent since graduation. All of these members were successful in passing round 1 of the application approvals. They will complete round 2 in late August. They were recognized for their round 1 success at the State Convention in April. During Banquet, we honored those students again for all of their hard work and dedication. While these students have graduated from BHS, they will always be part of our Alumni. We are very proud of their dedication to our organization.

Star Greenhand - Lucy Harris (9th grade)

Star Chapter Farmer - Kyler Stolarik (12th grade)

Gold Star Award

The Gold Star Award is presented to a certain member that has a drive and work ethic that is unmatched. This is the first time Batesville has given this award, and it is due to the joke about doing good so you can get a gold star sticker. This young man has worked tirelessly on everything he has been given or tasked with. He has been to every event, contest, and convention, and has never complained about the hours or effort involved. This student has never been an FFA officer, or on a leadership team, yet he is a prime example of what a leader truly is.

Julian Maddox

Attendance Awards

As FFA Members, our students have the opportunity to attend activities locally, all over the state, and even country. Each activity earned the members points for their attendance. During Banquet, we recognized those students who were able to show up to and participate in all of the various activities this school year.
